Easy Oat Dinner Rolls

Updated: Jun 30, 2020

Do you miss those fluffy dinner rolls you had before adopting a whole food plant based lifestyle? I've got you covered with our easy oat dinner rolls. As always our recipes will fit your plant-based needs and can be changed to any situation where you need a roll (savory or sweet).

Oat dinner rolls take a little bit of prep time so make sure you plan ahead when trying out our recipe. I usually start these mid-day so they are warm and ready for dinner time.

I have two recipes down below - both are amazing, however the spelt version gets almost double the size of the gluten free oat rolls.

[Photographs are from our oat rolls recipe]

Print The Recipe Here (New Feature!)

Gluten Free Oat Rolls

[Makes 8 Rolls]

2 1/2 cups (320 grams) oat flour

Tip: (pulse your rolled oats in a high speed blender to make a flour)

1/2 teaspoon (2 gram) instant or dry active yeast

1 tablespoon white miso mixed with 1/4 cup hot tap water

1 cup hot tap water (up to 130° F)

2 tbsp seasoning (I added dried chives)

1/4 cup of aquafaba [for browning - use right before baking] (optional)

Extra oat flour for kneading

Spelt-Oat Rolls

[Makes 8 Rolls]

1 1/4 cups (160 grams) oat flour

Tip: (pulse your rolled oats in a high speed blender to make a flour)

1 1/4 cups (160 grams) spelt flour

1/2 teaspoon (2 gram) instant or dry active yeast

1 tablespoon white miso mixed with 1/4 cup hot tap water

1 cup hot tap water (up to 130° F)

2 tbsp seasoning (I added dried chives)

1/4 cup of aquafaba [for browning - use right before baking] (optional)

Extra spelt flour for kneading

Directions:

[Are the same with both roll recipes]

+In a large bowl combine all dry ingredients.

+Mix in miso mixture and hot water.

+Stir all ingredients together until well combined.

+Cover with plastic wrap & let stand on counter top for 3 hours.

------------------------

+After the three hours place dough onto a WELL floured surface.

+The dough will be sticky and will need extra flour to make workable.

+Knead until dough becomes a ball and cut into 8 pieces.

+Make dinner roll shapes with dough and place on a baking pan lined with parchment paper.

Optional: Brush a small amount of aquafaba over rolls.

[This will give them a nice brown color]

+Bake at 450° F for 25 minutes until golden brown.

You can play around this recipe in making it even a sweet roll by swapping out the white miso for 3 tbsp of date paste.

I'm always swapping out different seasonings when making them: Italian seasoning and pizza season are a few of our favorites!

With either the spelt flour or just oat, both have a nice crispy edge and a soft bread inside.

I hope you'll give this recipe a try, and let us know if you liked it!

We love seeing photographs of our recipes and just in general hearing from you guys!

You could also use soy sauce, or liquid aminos I guess.

The miso is supposed to act as a salt replacement, I believe. I would use salt instead if you don't have access to it.

We don't get miso in Zimbabwe. What could I use to replace it?
